Blue Stinger

One of the first games to launch for the Dreamcast, Blue Stinger has some of the best graphics for a first generation title. As a Resident Evil type game it fared well against the competition. Opening with a beautiful FMV-like real time animation near an island operated by a scientific corporation, this is just the beginning.

Story

While on vacation on a small company yacht with your best friend, a missile looking egg crashes into the middle of the island creating a giant blue force field around it and trapping your friend outside. Before you can even think about what just happened a swarm of giant mutant bugs comes crashing into the boat as you jump off. An alien being takes the form of a popular anime character called Neflim. Your name is Eliot Ballad a member of ESER, during your quest on the island you'll find 2 friends and different types of enemies to blast out of your way.

Graphics

The graphics are a work of art, far beyond the work in Sonic Adventure. Being a first generation title it could not use the Dreamcast's full power. Character animation is OK, but slow. The enemies range from small flying creatures to gigantic dinosaur mutants larger than the screen.

Gameplay

Control was normal for a survival horror game, however it lacked the fear in Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The slow moving enemies and brightly lit locales were more for kids or for players unfamiliar with the genre. Varying frame rates in very active areas lead to slow action.

Sounds

Everything here was perfect in character and enemy sounds. The voice acting was more like an old kung fu movie, giving it a dubbed classic look. The music on the other hand was lacking and did not meet up to my standards (I'm a Nobuo Uematsu fan). The awful loops in background music made me often turn the volume down.

Overall

This game is eye candy at best,  low on gameplay and music. This was a great game while waiting for Resident Evil Code Veronica and Carrier and has some replay value. If you're a newbie to the genre this is a good game, however you veterans should steer clear of this and play at your own risk.
